SFCS Wellness Program
We believe that wellness is an ongoing lifestyle which requires taking responsibility and learning how to make healthy choices. Wellness is more than attending to your physical and nutritional needs, but also social, cultural, spiritual, emotional, life planning, environmental and intellectual needs. With a school-wide focus on all these areas of wellness, we believe it will only continue to strengthen the SFCS community.
During the school day, our focus will be primarily on physical and nutritional health while keeping the other areas of wellness in mind. To support our wellness efforts we ask that the Southside community be aware of the following:
*Please do not send pop, high fructose corn syrup beverages, or highly caffeinated drinks (e.g., coffee drinks, energy drinks) to school with your children. Experts tell us all the time how these types of drinks have no nutritional value – especially for youth who are growing and developing. If any staff person sees a student with these types of beverages, they will be asked to put them away until after school, and will be offered either water or a carton of milk. We will actively encourage students to drink plenty of
water and will educate them on the health and academic benefits of being well hydrated, as well as managing their intake of sugar and caffeine.18
*Please do not send candy to school with your children. Parents are encouraged to pack healthy lunches and to send with your child or donate to the school nutritious and healthy snacks such as cut fruit and vegetables, granola bars, pretzels, etc.
*Students will continue to receive at least 30 minutes of physical activity/recess time during their reading classes, in addition to our regular field trips to parks, etc.
If you have some ideas or suggestions you’d like to share about wellness at Southside, you may talk to any staff person!
