Would you like to know more about the standardized tests Southside students must take? Have you seen what the computer version of the MCA III looks like? Join us in the Computer Lab for our February Policy Coffee this Saturday from 10:45-11:45.
We'll take a look at how we use testing data and discuss different responses our students have to standardized tests. Pie and coffee will be served.
Thanks to School Board Chair Dana Neuhauser for passing along this very timely link about kids and testing.
Who does a law firm like Robins, Kaplan, Williams and Ciresi call on when they want a partner to help attorneys connect with young people and teach their own employees about Social Justice issues? Southside Family Charter School of course. Over the next few weeks we'll share some of the art work and artists' statements our students prepared for the firm's annual Attorneys of Color Conference.
Title: We Remember
By: Myles Andrew Hultgren

I want people to feel that, no matter what happens, no matter what hardships we have to get through, we will always remember the trials our ancestors had to go through.
This picture shows the Duluth Lynching, in 1920, when a huge mob lynced a group of African American people who were in jail.
Thank you to everyone who donated to SFCS! We more than tripled our $1200 goal for Give to the Max Day.

Give MN is putting dozens of school principals on the Orange Scream rollercoaster at the Mall of America to ride throughout the day November 15, 2012.
Our own Director, Tania will ride (and scream) to raise money for SFCS and the chance to win extra prize grant dollars as part of Give to the Max Day on GiveMN.org.
While Tania rides, donors will get the chance to win a “Golden Ticket” for SFCS—$1,000 added to one lucky donor’s donation, selected at random each hour for 24 hours. Plus, Give MN will draw for a Super-size Golden Ticket for $10,000 at the end of Give to the Max Day, randomly selected from all the day’s donations. This is THE day of 2012 to make a donation to SFCS.

SFCS is applying to participate in some exciting green activities this school year. Take a look at these "low tech" solutions to problems big and small. How many uses can you and your young person come up with for reusing plastic bottles?

September 18-24 is "One Read Week" in Minneapolis. This year's selection, Spirit Car by Diane Wilson, was chosen specifically to mark the 150th anniversary of the Dakota War and spur frank discussions of its legacy.
Garrison Keillor and Wilson will be discussing the book at 7:00 PM on Monday, the 24th at the Minneapolis Convention Center. We have two free tickets to be used by any Southside Family student or parent. Please call Toni, or e-mail toni [at] southsidefamilyschool.org if you'd like to attend. Metro Transit is also providing free passes to the event, download directly from the One Read web site http://oneminneapolisoneread.com/
